Solar energy is quickly becoming one of the most well-known and respected forms of alternative energy, especially within the home owner community.
“It’s logical to buy solar panels if you’re going to buy a home,” said Dr. Morgan DeFoort of the CSU engines lab, “but only if you’re going to be living in that house for a while, because essentially when you buy solar panels, you’re paying for 30 years of energy up front.”
According to an up and coming project for promoting solar energy called A Solar Future, “The Earth receives more energy from the sun in one hour than the world uses in a whole year.”
Using energy from the sun is obviously an extremely efficient choice, but it comes at a cost. Installing a roof full of solar tiles can cost upwards of $16,000. An innovative company that is trying to mass market solar homes, called SRS Energy, personalizes a roof just for your home using their own design of clay solar tiles. The SRS tiles blend with the roof on any home and make it a permanent, sustainable place to live.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the amount of renewable energy reached 6.83% of Americans in all sectors in 2007, .08% of which was solar, a number that will continue to climb as the idea of sustainable living reaches the masses and average families in America.
NASA tested a prototype for an alternative to satellites several years ago, that was completely sustainable and ran off of solar panels that covered the entire wingspan of the aircraft. It was called the Helios and it’s possibly the most interesting aircraft I’ve ever seen:
